Africa...

African tours starting from gbp 1685

Africa is a land of rugged coasts, empty desert and shimmering savannah.

In the east, Kenya is deep safari country with lions, elephants, giraffes, zebra and wildebeest all roaming free across huge parks and wildlife reserves.

Further south, the beaches, bush, vineyards and sophisticated cities give South Africa an appeal all of its own.

Scenery and wildlife

Kenya's national parks and wildlife reserves are unparalleled. The Samburu, Aberdares and Maasai Mara parks are home to lions, elephants, rhinos, cheetahs, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, various antelopes and hippos. It's here in the Maasai Mara that you may get a chance to see millions of stampeding wildebeest on their annual migration. South Africa, as well as being rich in natural attractions - mountains, forests, beaches and wildlife - has some beautiful cosmopolitan cities that rival the world's best.

Way of life

There are more than 70 tribal groups in Kenya and they all speak their own language as well as sharing the official one of Swahili. But because English is taught in schools, it is widely spoken and you'll have no trouble communicating. In South Africa, the most common languages are English, Afrikaans and Zulu. Although you're not likely to have any problem with crime in either Kenya or South Africa, you should carry your money discreetly and exercise the usual caution.

Money and tipping

The best places to change money in Kenya are foreign exchange bureaus, although we recommend that you purchase your currency before travelling. In South Africa, traveller's cheques in major currencies can be changed at most banks and you'll find that credit cards are also widely accepted. Tipping, from 10-15%, is expected in both Kenya and South Africa.

Cuisine

Ugali (maize porridge), bean and meat sauces, and barbecued goat meat are traditional Kenyan favourites but a variety of dishes based around curry flavours will also be available. In South Africa expect to sample fine fresh seafood on the coasts, Indian food in Durban and, of course, some truly fabulous wine.

Suitable clothing

Kenya's climate is tropical and can be very hot, and while South Africa is generally cooler, it can also be hot so lightweight cotton clothes in neutral and animal-friendly colours are best. Sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent and a sunhat are essential and you'll probably want to bring binoculars and a camera as well. Mornings and evenings can be cold in South Africa's Kruger National Park, so pack a warm layer.

Shopping

You'll find lovely souvenirs of animals carved from wood in both Kenya and South Africa as well as beaded, woven and printed fabrics.
