Enthralling, enchanting, inspiring - Europe is an all-encompassing blend of beauty, culture and heritage. Combining incredibly diverse landscapes of refined and glamorous coastal resorts, stunning verdant groves, romantic rustic villages nestled amid hills and dales, mighty rolling rivers and classical cosmopolitan cities, this harmonious assembly is nectar for the imagination.
Offering some of the finest gourmet cuisine in the world and wines of the highest repute, wherever you visit in Europe you'll find the country magnificent, unique and incomparable.
Scenery
Although one of the smallest continents, Europe combines an intense and varied mixture of scenery, including some of the world's most beautiful sights: the deep verdant forests of Germany and Bohemia; the omnipresent waterscapes and tree-covered vistas of Finland and the Baltics; the luminescent mountainous regions of Tuscany; the burgeoning rural expanse of vineyards and colourful fruit groves in Provence; and the rugged coastlines and soft sand beaches of Italy and the French Riviera.
Way of life
Although cultures and customs vary between countries, you'll find that no matter where you are, the people are welcoming and friendly. Each country has its own language and you'll find that even within individual countries, dialects often vary from region to region. English is the second language for many European countries and you'll find it widely spoken in most major cities and towns. Christianity is the main religion although centuries of multicultural influence means there is a wide variety of other religious edifices and customs to enjoy. Though generally low, crime levels vary from place to place so the usual caution and common sense apply.
Money and tipping
Sterling traveller's cheques are recommended for Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia while Euro traveller's cheques are best for Italy, Finland, France, Austria and Germany. In either case, traveller's cheques can be readily changed in banks and hotels except in Russia, where traveller's cheques are hard to change and cash in US dollars, which must be in pristine condition, is preferred. It can also be hard to change traveller's cheques outside of the main cities and towns in the Baltics. Credit cards are accepted in most major cities, but cash is always handy for small purchases. Tipping isn't common in Russia or Finland but gratuities are appreciated. In all other European countries, tipping is expected: usually 5-15% of restaurant bills or a few euros for waiters, taxi drivers and porters.
Cuisine
European cuisine varies immensely, with each region offering a host of gastronomic delights. From France's world-famous gourmet cuisine and Italy's renowned pasta and pizza to Hungary's rich, paprika-laced meat dishes, there is something to suit every palate. Russian specialities include caviar and stroganoff while Finland and the Baltics are known for their fish; fruit and other fresh produce are prevalent throughout most of Europe. Some of the world's best wines are cultivated here, including classic French varieties and the fruity flavours of Italy, while Czech beer is another highlight with many delicious brands at a very reasonable cost.
Suitable clothing
Europe is generally very warm in summer and very cold during winter, even freezing in some areas. Light clothes with a warm layer are fine for summer and, since light showers are not uncommon at any time, bring a waterproof as well. In winter you may need a coat, especially in Russia, Finland and the Baltics where a thick coat and warm footwear is recommended. You might also like to pack a smart outfit for evenings out at restaurants or shows.
Shopping
You'll find a wide choice of souvenirs throughout Europe, with each area offering distinctive produce. Flavoured vodka, Matryoshka dolls and fur hats are popular in Russia, while each of the Baltic States produces liqueurs flavoured with popular local ingredients. Explore markets and malls in various regions for French wine, porcelain and cheese, Italian decorative paper goods and marble, glass or alabaster sculpture, Finnish rugs, wall hangings and rare jewellery, Austrian crystal, jewellery and clocks, Hungarian folk art, Korond pottery and red and black embroidered felt linens, or Czech handmade puppets, embroidered knitwear and Bohemian hand-cut crystal. Both France and Italy are renowned for their couture and designer clothing, so many beautiful and unique items can also be found in the chic and exclusive boutiques.
