New Zealand and Fiji

New Zealand tours starting from gbp 3295

Aotearoa, 'Land of the Long White Cloud', is the name given to this place of rare and solitary beauty by its native Maori people.

With two main islands and a number of smaller ones, the ocean is ever-present here, and the landscape takes in eerie boiling mud pools, moody volcanoes and majestic mountain passes. Add gorgeous cities, an overwhelmingly friendly people, and New Zealand is the destination of dreams.

Equally stunning but entirely different, Fiji will give you a taste of Pacific island life after your tour.

Scenery and wildlife

Surrounded by ocean, New Zealand has fantastic sea as well as mountain scenery. The white sand beaches of the Bay of Islands, the deep, clear waters of Doubtful Sound, and the snowfields and glaciers of Mount Cook are just a few examples. You are likely to see some extraordinary birds as well as dolphins, seals and whales. An archipelago in the South Pacific, Fiji is filled with unspoilt natural beauty, from lush rainforests to the pretty coast - perfect for an extension from New Zealand.

Way of life

New Zealanders of Maori and European descent live side by side in harmony here. While there are two official languages, English and Maori, English is the first language of more than 90% of the population, so you'll have no problems getting by. In Fiji, there's an interesting blend of Melanesian, Polynesian, Micronesian, Indian, Chinese and European influences - you could experience traditional rituals, held just as they have been for centuries.

Money and tipping

Sterling traveller's cheques, for changing in banks and hotels, are the best way to carry money, though cards are also widely accepted. A little bit of cash is useful for small purchases. It's standard to add 10% to a restaurant bill if you're happy with the service.

Cuisine

New Zealand is famous for its sheep farming, so meat eaters will enjoy excellent local lamb. Fresh salmon is also exceptional and with many top-ranking vineyards, there'll be plenty of chances to try some world-class wines.

Suitable clothing

Many of New Zealand's most incredible sights are best seen on foot, so you'll need comfortable clothes and walking shoes. Temperatures are changeable so bring both light and warm layers and something a little dressier for smart restaurant dining. There'll be plenty of chances for swimming too, so pack your swimsuit. If you're going to Fiji, pack for summer - the islands boast pristine white-sand beaches, coral reefs and a sunny climate.

Shopping

You'll find exquisite Maori carvings made from wood, stone, shell and bone, and jewellery made from pearly paua shell, greenstone and greenwacke pebbles. And of course, there's a fantastic range of premium woollen and sheepskin products.

Taxes

Prices will usually include a 12.5% tax similar to the UK's VAT. You'll also need to pay a local airport departure tax, which is currently NZ$25 per passenger but could change without notice.
